Plant description: Wood Betony forms a dense rosette of leaves and sends up square flower stems to 60 cm tall. The long green leaves are oblong to lanceolate, toothed with a thick central vein. The purple flowers are in a dense terminal spike at the top of the stalk.

Part used: Leaf and flower.

Harvest: When the plant begins flowering.

Active Constituents: Not well defined. Contains alkaloids including Betonicine and stachydrine.

Energetics: Bitter, cool.

Actions: Sedative, bitter tonic, nervine, aromatic vulnerary.

Uses: Wood Betony has traditionally used for tension headache, vertigo/dizziness, anxiety, neuralgia, nervous debility.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water over one teaspoon of dried herb and drink after five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times per day. Fluid Extract (1:2) – 15—30ml/week
