Botanical Name: Thymus vulgaris

Plant Family: Lamiaceae

Plant description: Thyme is a native to Western Mediterranean and Southern Italy. Thyme is a small woody stemmed shrub, densely branched and sometimes gnarled and twisted. It grows to 30 cm tall with opposite, grey-green, aromatic, linear to elliptic leaves. The small flowers are white to lilac in many-flowered terminal inflorescences. Thyme retains most of its leaves in winter. There are many different cultivars and varieties of thyme that differ widely in leaf colour and flavour.

Part used: Leaf.

Harvest: As the plant comes into flower.

Active Constituents: Essential oil containing mainly phenols (thymol, carvacrol, borneol, pinene, linalool), acetophenone glycosides,, saponins, flavonoids, triterpenes, phenolic acids, saccharides, biphenyls, tannins, carnosol, carnosic acid.

Energetics: Pungent, heating.

Actions: Expectorant, antispasmodic, carminative, digestive tonic, astringent, anti-tussive, antihelminthic, antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, rubefacient (topically).

Uses: Historically though to be an excellent respiratory herb used for colds, nasopharyngeal catarrh, pharyngitis, laryngitis, whooping cough, bronchitis, bronchiectasis and asthma. It is particularly good in dry irritable coughs, and also thought to be useful for indigestion, diarrhoea and eradication of helicobacter pylori in peptic ulceration. It has been traditionally used for nocturnal bed wetting in children and topically as a mouth wash or gargle for gum disease, mouth ulcers, pharyngitis and tonsillitis and bad breath.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water onto one teaspoon of dried herb and leave to infuse for five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times daily. Fluid Extract (1:2) – 15—40ml/week.

Cautions: Avoid in known allergy.
