Botanical Name: Scutellaria spp

Plant Family: Lamiaceae

Plant description: Skullcap is native to North America and grows to 90 cm tall. It has square stems and leaf stalks, opposite leaves deltoid ovate to lanceolate and toothed. The delicate flowers are blue on one sided racemes in the leaf axils.

Part used: Aerial parts.

Harvest: As the plant comes into flower.

Active Constituents: Flavonoids (baicalin, scutellarin), diterpenes, amino acids, essential oil (trace amounts), caffeic acid.

Energetics: Bitter, cool.

Actions: Nervine tonic, mild sedative, spasmolytic.

Uses: Skullcap tradiationally was used to relaxe states of nervous tension as well as rejuvenating the nervous system. It has often been used for stress, anxiety, agitation, irritation, premenstrual tension, insomnia, nervous exhaustion, depression, insomnia and neuralgia. It is historically considered specific for the treatment of seizures and hysteria.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water onto one teaspoon of dried herb and leave to infuse for five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times daily. Fluid Extract (1:2) – 15—30/week.
