Botanical Name: Salvia officinalis

Plant Family: Lamiaceae

Plant description: Sage is native to Southern Europe, particularly near the Mediterranean. It is a small, upright, woody stemmed shrub to 70 cm tall. The young green stems are square white and woolly. The grey-green leaves are aromatic opposite ovate to lanceolate, with rough surfaces. Flowers are bluish-purple in terminal spikes. It is a semi-deciduous perennial.

Part used: Leaf and flower.

Harvest: As the plant comes into flower.

Active Constituents: Essential oil 2.5% (containing monoterpenoids such as alpha- and beta- thujone, camphor, and cineole), diterpenoids (such as carnosic acid and carnosol), triterpenoids, flavonoids (such as 5 methoxysalvigenin), phenolic acids, tannins, resin, oestrogenic substances.

Energetics: Pungent, bitter, astringent, heating.

Actions: Antioxidant, antimicrobial, spasmolytic, astringent, antihyperhidrotic, uterine stimulant, cholagogue.

Uses: Is often used topically, as a mouth – wash or gargle, for inflammation of mouth, tongue, throat, tonsils and laryngx. As a compress it stimulates wound healing. It can ease the menopausal symptom of excessive perspiration, inhibit lactation and relieve dyspepsia. Traditionally it has been used to improve memory and concentration. It is also used for fever, tension headache and fatigue.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water onto one teaspoon of dried herb and leave to infuse for five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times daily. Fluid Extract (1:2) – 15—30/week.

Cautions: Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation. Caution with long term use (except for low thujone varieties).
