Long regarded as a blood cleanser red clover has been used traditionally for skin disorders and in treating certain tumours.

Botanical Name: Trifolium pratense

Plant Family: Fabaceae

Plant description: Red Clover is native to Europe and rows to 60cm. The stems are softly hairy and the leaves trifoliate with ovate leaflets. The flowers form dense round heads and vary from pink to purple depending on variety. The plant dies back for winter but keeps growing low to the ground. It is a perennial but will often not last more 3 years.

Part used: Leaf and flower.

Harvest: The flowers and the first set of leaves should be harvested when the flowers are young.

Active Constituents: Isoflavones (including formononetin and biochanin A), flavanols, phenolic acids (including salicylic and p-coumaric acids), essential oil.

Energetics: Bitter, sweet, cooling.

Actions: Alterative, expectorant, anti-tumour (traditional), anti-spasmodic, nervine, sedative, tonic, phyto-oestrogenic.

Uses: Red clover has been traditionally used for chronic skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis, chronic cough such as whooping cough. The seeds have thought to have possible role in benign prostatic hypertrophy and for menopausal symptoms. More recently it’s phyto-oestrogenic properties have been recognised.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water over one teaspoon of dried herb and drink after five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times per day. Fluid extract (1:2) – 20—40/week.
