Traditionally raspberry leaf tea has been used as a uterine tonic during pregnancy. It has also been used for painful periods.

Botanical Name: Rubus idaeus

Plant Family: Rosaceae

Plant description: Raspberry is native to Europe and Asia and grows to 2 m. It has small sharp bristles on its stem green above with furrowed veins and light creamy grey underneath with 3 or 5 ovate leaflets. The white flowers are in drooping branchlets and the fleshy cone shaped fruit are red to yellow and delicious.

Part used: Leaf.

Harvest: The plant should be harvested just before flowering.

Active Constituents: Not well defined. Does contain Tannins (including gallotannins and ellagitannins), flavonoids.

Energetics: Astringent, sweet, cooling.

Actions: Astringent, partus preparator, uterine tonic, antidiarrhoeal.

Uses: Has traditionally been used from the second trimester of pregnancy to tone the uterus and promote healthy uterine contractions during labour. It has also, historically, been used in painful periods, morning sickness which extends beyond the second trimester, uterine haemorrhage and prolapse. As an astringent it was traditionally used in diarrhoea. Topically traditionally thought to be helpful for tonsillitis, pharyngitis, mouth ulcer, gingivitis and conjunctivitis.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water over one teaspoon of dried herb and drink after five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times per day. Fluid Extract (1:2) – 30—100/week.

Cautions: Best to use from the second trimester onwards in pregnancy.

Interactions: Mineral supplements. Raspberry may inhibit their absorption if taken simultaneously.
