Botanical Name: Leonurus cardiaca

Plant Family: Lamiaceae

Plant description: Motherwort is an erect plant growing to 1.5 m tall. This square stemmed plant has strong smelling lobed leaves with toothed margins up to 100 mm across. The flowers are in axillary whorls up the stem, pink to purple in colour. They are prickly when mature. It dies back to a crown of leaves in the winter.

Part used: Leaf.

Harvest: The leaf should be harvested when the plant comes into flower.

Active Constituents: Alkaloids (L-stachydrine, leonurine, iridoides (leonuride), diterpenoids, flavonoids, caffeic acid derivatives, tannins.

Energetics: Bitter, pungent, cool.

Actions: Nervine tonic, cardiac tonic, hypotensive, anti-arrhythmic, antithyroid, spasmolytic, emmenogogue.

Uses: Motherwort has tradiationally been used for palpitations, nervous tachycardia, mild hyperthyroidism (for the cardiac symptoms), secondary amenorrhoea, and painful periods.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water over one teaspoon of dried herb and allow to infuse for five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times per day. Fluid Extract (1:2) – 15—25m/week.

Cautions: Use with caution in pregnancy and lactation but adverse effects unlikely. May cause contact dermatitis and volatile oil may cause photosensitisation.
