Marshmallow root has similar soothing properties to the leaf, but is used mainly for the digestive tract and skin.

Botanical Name: Althea officinalis

Plant Family: Malvaceae

Plant description: From Europe and Asia, this erect perennial can grow to over two meters in deep soil. The stem and leaves are softly hairy. The grey green leaves are broadly ovate with toothed margins, tapering to a point. The mauve coloured flowers have five petals, are 3–4 cm in diameter and clustered in the leaf axils. The root is quite large with smooth pale yellow skin, and extends in thick branches mostly laterally for 40 cm. The plant dies down in winter.

Part used: The leaf and flower, and root.

Harvest: Leaf and flower is harvested when the flowers are young. The root is harvested in late autumn or winter.

Active Constituents: Mucilage (root 35%, leaf10%), flavonoids, phenolic acids, starch.

Energetics: Cool.

Actions: Demulcent especially on skin, mouth and digestive tract, reflex demulcent respiratory and urinary tract, emollient, diuretic.

Uses: The root is traditionally used, mainly for the digestive tract and skin, whilst the leaves are used for the respiratory and urinary systems. Uses historically include – gastrointestinal inflammation and ulceration including peptic ulcer, gastritis, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome; respiratory irritation and inflammation including asthma, bronchitis, cough; inflammation of urinary tract such as cystitis or urethritis; Constipation; topically for burns, ulcers, abscesses, boils, pharyngitis and largyngitis.

Dosage: Root: Decoction – boil one cup of water with one teaspoon of dried root for ten minutes in a covered pot. Drink up to one cup three times daily. Glycetract (1:5)–20— 40ml/week. Leaf: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water over one teaspoon and drink after five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times per day. Glycetract (1:5)–20— 40m/week.

Note that glycetract extraction is preferred as it extracts mucilage better than an alcoholic tincture.

Cautions: Best taken away from prescribed drugs as Marshmallow can reduce their absorption.
