Botanical Name: Hyssopus officinalis

Plant Family: Lamiaceae

Plant description: Native to Central and Southern Europe, and temperate Western Asia, Hyssop is a woody stemmed shrub growing to 80cm. The leaves are dark green, linear and opposite. The flowers are dark blue (violet, red, pink and white forms exist) in whorls in the upper leaf axils.

Part used: Leaf and flower.

Harvest: The leaf and flower should be harvested when the plant is in its early flowering stage.

Active Constituents: Essential oil (mainly camphor, pinocamphone and beta-pinene, flavonoids (diosmin), terpenes, phenylpropanoids, tannins, resin.

Energetics: Acrid, warm.

Actions: Expectorant, carminative, spasmolytic, diaphoretic, mild sedative, peripheral vasodilatation.

Uses: c, nasopharyngeal catarrh, bronchitis, asthma. Topically, it is a useful gargle for pharyngitis. As a nervine it is useful for anxiety, hysteria and petit mal epilepsy.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water onto one teaspoon of dried herb and leave to infuse for five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times daily. Fluid Extract (1:2) – 15—30 ml/week.

Cautions: Avoid in pregnancy.
