Botanical Name: Zingiber officinale

Plant Family: Zingiberareae

Plant description: Native to Asia this aromatic, perennial herb grows to 60 cm in height with narrow lanceolate leaves on green stems. The flowering stalk arises from the root and ends in a spike from which white or yellow flower blooms. Ginger has been a prized plant since the earliest times. It is regarded as one of the world’s best medicines.

Part used: The root.

Harvest: The root is dug after at least one year of growth.

Active Constituents: Volatile oil (including cineole borneol, linalool, zingiberol, camphene, citral, phellandrene) pungent principles (gingerols, shogaols) and a possible alkaloid.

Energetics: spicy, hot, pungent, sweet.

Actions: Antiemetic, carminative and visceral antispasmotic, perpherial circulatory stimulant and vasodilator, diaphoretic, expectorant and pulmonary antiseptic, anti- inflammatory, antiplatelet, aromatic digestive.

Uses: Ginger is traditionally thought to be excellent for conditions with fever, cold and chills especially involving the respiratory system such as the common cold, influenza, bronchitis and bronchietectasis. It also aids digestive weakness, dyspepsia, intestinal colic, flatulence, bloating and nausea, including morning sickness and with travel. Ginger improves peripheral circulation and is often used when this is impaired such as with chilblains, Reynaud’s syndrome and cramp. It is indicated in arthritis, both osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis. It can be used topically in the base of many fibrositis, muscle sprain and pain relieving rubs. In combination with other herbs it is useful for spasmodic dysmenorrhoea and endometriosis.

Dosage: Decoction – boil one teaspoon of dried root in two cups of water for 10 minutes in a covered pot. Drink up to one cup three times daily. Fluid Extract (1:2) – 5—15ml/week.

Cautions: In peptic ulceration, gallstones and with Warfarin. In pregnancy avoid high doses.

Interactions: Potentiates anticoagulants such as Warfarin.
