Botanical Name: Scrophularia nodosa

Plant Family: Scrophulariaceae

Plant description: Figwort is native to Britain growing to 1.5 m. It is an erect plant and has a square stem, opposite leaves ovate at base and lanceolate near the top with toothed margins. It has small trumpet like greenish purple flowers.

Part used: Aerial parts.

Harvest: When plant is coming into flower.

Energetics: Cool, dry.

Active Constituent: Saponins (diosmin and hesperidin), flavonoids (inc. aucubin), cardioactive glycosides and phenolic acids.

Actions: Alterative with circulatory stimulating properties, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, laxative.

Uses: Figwort is tradiationally used for detoxification of the body and thought to be especially helpful for eczema and psoriasis. It was traditionally used for swollen lymph nodes and as a general alterative remedy. Thought ot be best in conditions of poor circulation. Applied externally, it is thought to help the healing of burns wounds and ulcers.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water onto one teaspoon of dried herb. Leave to infuse for five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times per day. Liquid Extract (1:2) – 20—40 ml per week

Cautions: Avoid in tachycardia and other heart conditions.
