Botanical Name: Foeniculum vulgare

Plant Family: Apiaceae.

Plant description: The Fennel plant is native to Southern Europe and Western Asia. It is an aromatic perennial with thick blue green pith filled stems. The feathery leaves are alternate, deeply divided into thread like segments with strong aniseed like aroma. It has umbels of small yellow flowers which ripen into small oval shaped, grey brown seeds.

Part used: The seed.

Harvest: Collected in autumn and shaken to release seeds when dried.

Active Constituents: Essential oil containing mainly trans-anethole and fenchone, fixed oil, phenolic acids, flavinoids, coumarins, furanocoumarins, tannins

Energetics: Dry, warm.

Actions: Carminative, anti-spasmodic, stomachic, stimulates appetite, expectorant, galactagogue, anti-microbial, oestrogen modulating, diuretic.

Uses: Fennel is  tradiationally a digestive herb thought to be helpful for flatulence, flatulent dyspepsia, colic, anorexia, nausea and diarrhea. It has been used historically to eases coughing in bronchitis and asthma. Fennel is thought to increases breast milk production and historically has been used topically for conjunctivitis, blepharitis, pharyngitis and idiopathic hirsutism. It has also historically been used for spasmodic dysmenorrhoea and secondary amenorrhoea. It has a reputation for assisting with weight loss.

Dosage: Decoction – one teaspoon of dried seeds should be simmered in a covered pot in two cups of water for ten minutes. Drink up to one cup three times daily. Fluid Extract (1:2) – 20—40 ml/week.

Cautions: In gastro-oesphageal reflux.
