Plant description: Echinacea purpurea is native to North America. It is a perennial herb growing to 1.5 meters with strong stems and dark green broadly lanceolate leaves roughly toothed with a central midrib and branching veins. Flowers have pink to purple petals 3-4cm long. The dark red center of the flower is spiny, taking the form of a cone as it matures. It has a shallow fibrous root system. The tops die down in the winter. It differs from other species of Echinacea in that it has broader leaves with branched veins, while the others have narrower leaves with parallel veins. Its root system is also shallower and more spreading than the deep roots of other varieties.

Harvest: All parts harvested when the plant is in early flowering stage when used for making fresh plant extract. Aerial parts harvested when in early flowering stage for dried aerial parts, Root dug in autumn fo producing dried root. Active Constituents: Lipophylic components – polyacetylenes and alkylamides, Caffeic acid derivatives (cichoric acid), Polysaccharides, essential oils, glycosides, phytosterols, carbohydrates (inulin -12 – 20%), vitamins, flavonoids, monoterpenes and hydrocarbons.

Energetics: Warm, acrid, sweet.

Actions: Immune enhancing, immune modulating, depuritive, lymphatic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, sialogogue, vulnerary, parasiticide, antiseptic, peripheral vasodilator, digestive, antispasmodic on digestive and respiratory systems.

Uses: Echinacea is traditionally used to treat a wide range of acute and chronic infections. It historically has also been used as a prophylactic to strengthen weakened or suppressed immunity for example in post viral syndromes and during chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Also in long term treatment of allergy and intolerance and to promote wound healing.

Dosage: Aerial parts – infusion- pour one cup of boiling water on one teaspoon of dried herb. Leave to infuse for five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times per day. Decoction – one teaspoon dried root simmered in two cups of water for 10 minutes in a covered pot. Drink up to one cup three times a day. Liquid Extract – root (1:2) – 25—60/week. Liquid Extract – whole fresh plant (1:5) – 20—80ml/week.

Cautions: Rare contact allergy. Caution for those with tendency to allergic reaction especially Asteracea (daisy) family. Rare anaphylaxis has been reported, (1 case in 50 million doses). Use cautiously with immunosuppressant drugs. Use with autoimmune disease is controversial.
