Plant description: Catnip is a perennial with square branching stems up to 1 m. The leaves are ovate, toothed and blue green with whitish undersurfaces. The flowers are white in whorls at the ends of branchlets occurring throughout late summer. Similar to the scent of mint, the scent of catnip is much appreciated by cats. It is native to Europe.

Part used: The leaf and flower.

Harvest: When coming into flower.

Energetics: Spicy, bitter, cool.

Active Constituents: Volatile oils of alpha and beta nepetalactone, citronellol, geraniol, bitter principles, tannins and iridoids.

Actions: Carminative, relaxant, anti-spasmodic, diaphoretic, sedative, astringent, antitussive, emmenagogue, nervine, digestive stimulant.

Uses: Used for the treatment of colds and flu. Catnip can be used for congestion as in bronchitis, middle ear infection or sinusitis. It promotes perspiration, reducing the body’s temperature and is therefore useful in fevers. Catnip aids digestion helping to settle severe intestinal spasms, stomach upsets, indigestion, flatulence and childhood diarrhea. Relaxing to the nervous system catnip is calming where there is restlessness, insomnia and nervousness.

Dosage: Infusion – pour one cup of boiling water onto one teaspoons of dried herb. Leave to infuse for five minutes. Drink up to one cup three times per day.

Cautions: If taken in very large doses, catnip may induce vomiting. To ensure effectiveness, the herb should be infused, not boiled.
