Botanical Name: Sambucus nigra

Plant Family: Caprifoliaceae 

Plant description: Native to Europe this small deciduous tree has dark green, oval serrated leaves and small creamy white flowers in umbels in late spring and early summer. It is spreading and grows to 10 meters. The flowers develop into bunches of dark purple berries by late autumn. It usually has many stems arising from the base. 

Part used: The berry. 

Harvest: Collect berries when dark purple in late summer/autumn.
